Justin's not so positive acceptance speech

The full text of Justin Trudeau's speech can be found here. I wanted to highlight the section talking about the Conservatives and Stephen Harper. It is the first major section after thank you's, and while there are many positive things that come after this lengthy section, the gloves sure came off quickly. Note that this isn't substantive policy criticism, it is presenting a caricature of Steven Harper and the Conservatives to vilify.

At least he didn't do what Bob Rae did, and comment that the only two pieces of furniture in Sussex was a thrown and a mirror. Okay, okay, I admit it is pretty funny. But it isn't positive politics, and we can't pretend it is, even if the way one does negative political attacks is to attack the negative politics attacks of the other side.

Canadians want better leadership and a better government. Canadians want to be led, not ruled.

They are tired of the negative, divisive politics of Mr. Harper’s Conservatives. And unimpressed that the NDP, under Mr. Mulcair, have decided that if you can’t beat them, you might as well join them.

We are fed up with leaders who pit Canadians against Canadians. West against East, rich against poor, Quebec against the rest of the country, urban against rural.

Canadians are looking to us, my friends. They are giving us a chance, hopeful that the party of Wilfrid Laurier can rediscover its sunny ways.

Hopeful that positive politics has a fighting chance against the steady barrage of negativity that you and I both know is coming soon to TV screens across Canada. The phone messages, our volunteers tell us, have already started.

To adapt a sentiment from the great American President Franklin D. Roosevelt: never before in this country have the forces of negativity, cynicism and fear been so united in their hostility toward one candidate.

The Conservative Party will now do what it does. It will try to spread fear. It will sow cynicism. It will attempt to convince Canadians that we should be satisfied with what we have now.

For at the heart of their unambitious agenda is the idea that “better” is just not possible.

That to hope for something more from our politics and our leaders, more humanity, more transparency, more compassion, is naive and inevitably, will lead to disappointment.

And they will promote that divisive and destructive idea with passionate intensity. They will do so for a simple reason…
They are afraid.

But… And I want to make this perfectly clear… My fellow Canadians, it is not my leadership that Mr. Harper and his party fear.

It’s yours.

There is nothing that these Conservatives fear more than an engaged and informed Canadian citizen.

Stephen Harper, you see, is a cynical, unambitious, divisive coward, content to promote the destructive path of pessimism while quivering in his boots at the threat of Justin, and responding with unrelenting negativity.

I have no lost love for Stephen Harper, any reader of my blog knows that. And I certainly acknowledge the efficacy of negative ads in politics; I don't pretend to believe as a deontological precept that one should not be negative. But we should be honest about it, and not pretend that what is clearly negative character attacks are anything but. I had presumed we were going to have to wait till Question Period to see it quite so poignantly, not the first substantive section of his acceptance speech. The Liberals may choose, perhaps for financial reasons, not to run negative attack ads for a while. However, in everything else, there is no reason to expect anything else but the above.

Davis

As originally posted on: TL In Exile
April 11, 2013

There is nothing left to wait for. The Feds have made their moves already and where federal legislation may not work, they have gone into the states, Missouri for example. They are coming every day in every state in different ways.

The revolution from individual freedom and personal responsibility has taken place. The ideals of liberty are gone. The concept of collectivism has permeated everything that was America and destroyed it.

The wiser of us will caution you against action toward the despostic forces of gun legislation, but keep in mind, the Second Amendment is not all that they are violating. Every single right is under siege. The only rights left are those we are willing to die to protect.

I am not one of the wise.

Therefore, I have given up on any sort of organized action. The community is targeted by infiltrators or should I say infiltraitors? We are being watched; our blogs monitored. In some cases individuals are under surveillance.

In every case it is possible that if we seek to acquire weapons with which to fight for our rights, our contacts will likely be federal government agents or conspirators with the federal government.

The tactics are simple: intrude on an individual, acquire evidence (real or fabricated) with which to leverage compliance and information against the rest. Set up a scenario where others will come under the same scrutiny and wait for one of them to be ready to act and then bust the lot of them with conspiracy to overthrow the government.

They do not need facts, they do not need evidence, they do not need to comply with the Constitution. All they need to do is bust a few of us and incriminate the rest.

Therefore, I have decided that the only action likely to achieve the end is personal and individual action, in conjunction with no one else, in contact with no one else. It is not through purchasing weapons of resistance, but by using the weapons they supply. It is by exploiting existing sources, not introducing sources.

The time to fight back is now. If you are dedicated to the cause of liberty, or just against despotism and oppression this is your fight and it must begin.

If you are not in the planning stage, you should be. If you are not in the implementation stage, you should be getting close.

This is the counter-revolution and you should be part of it.

Political Problems Have Only One Real Solution

by Robert Higgs

As originally posted on: The Beacon
February 18, 2013

Eldridge Cleaver famously declared, “You’re either part of the solution or you’re part of the problem.” Although I did not agree with this sentiment in its original context, it has more definite applicability in regard to what one might think of as “solving political problems.”

Notice, first, that politics consists in the struggle to control the power that allows one party (whether an individual or a group) to impose its preferences on other parties who object to this imposition. Some political struggles involve attempts to make new impositions; others involve attempts to throw off existing, unwanted impositions. Because in our time the state is usually the organization that possesses the greatest coercive power, politics often boils down to a contest over who will control the state and how state authorities will wield their power. Politics, in short, ultimately has to do with the question: who will be master?

When we recognize that political problems always involve this question, we see immediately that they can have no solution short of complete capitulation by the political losers. Unless they concede that others will be their masters, they will continue to struggle, either overtly or covertly. Thus, political problems remain perpetually unresolved in any more than a tactical, short-term way. Losers may appear to have given up, but usually if not always they will continue to harbor a desire to throw off their master or some aspect of the master’s regime and continue to work in some way toward the attainment of that objective.

Of course, wherever more than one way of dealing with an issue exists, there is no necessity of resort to politics. If everyone agrees to let each party act as it wishes without coercive interference, a genuine political solution does exist: abandon politics. Of course, many social thinkers deny the feasibility of this solution as a general matter, however much they may concede that many issues can be handled satisfactorily by following the rule, laissez faire, laissez passer. If no genuine “public goods” exist (as some theorists maintain), however, then complete individual liberty solves every political problem ipso facto. Notice, though, that this “political solution” works only because it rules out genuinely political action entirely.

If one is willing to live and let live, to accept that each party may go its own way and deal with its perceived problems as it prefers, provided only that it allows equal latitude to every other party, then all political problems as such evaporate. The difficulty arises from some parties’ insistence on having their own way, however objectionable that way may be to other parties. To return to Cleaver’s dictum, adding appropriate amendments: You’re either part of the solution (by abandoning participation in politics) or you’re part of the problem (of endless political conflict).

The ballots have opened in the Liberal leadership and excitement grows as turnout is high. They have been steadily counting and so far about a 1/3rd of those registered to vote have done so. They have until the 14th to choose a new leader and there's still speculation and debate going on. Some party insiders think that Justin will win by a large margin while other insiders think he'll win by an even bigger margin. However, among the Canadian population things are not so predisposed. While many people are sure that Justin will win, a sizable percentage think that he already has won and has been leader for the past 6 months. This is certainly a display of Liberal Party democracy in action.

It is hard to say whether Justin is doing a victory dance or
pretending he's Neo from, 'The Matrix.'

After using a pic of Cesar Chavez as their doodle for an April Fool's joke, Google has now outraged many. After pointless Panda updates, paying Adsense publishers a declining share of the profit, and trying to compete with Facebook, they have come out with the dumbest thing I've ever seen. It's called, Google Nose. This is technology gone crazy!

For years scientists have contemplated coming out with, 'Smellovision.' No, I say! It's not possible to sit at your computer desk and smell like the beach. Toying with these things Google is like Icarus flying too close to the sun: The wax holding your wings in place, Google, will melt and you'll fall down into the ocean.

Already thousands of people are saying, "Whatever happened to Yahoo?" They were a great site. Why did all of us move to Google anyway?

I am currently changing this site over to Wordpress and closing all of my Google accounts.

http://ca.yahoo.com/

This past week in Islam...

An Egyptian satirist who models himself after Jon Stewart of the Comedy Network's, 'Daily Show,' is in a lot of trouble. Bassem Youssef has been arrested and is now out on bail. His crime? Making jokes about the countries president. It looks like Youseff may be in and out of jail for the next ten years. The real joke is that the president, Mohamed Morsi, leads what's called the, 'Freedom and Justice Party.'* http://vladtepesblog.com/?p=61530

*Also Known as the Muslim Brotherhood.

Freedom is also being clawed back in Saudi Arabia where the government doesn't like how Twitter users can remain anonymous, saying what they like without reprisals. They are considering making Tweeters register with ID. Providing personal identification over the internet probably isn't a good idea in a country that is ruled by sharia law, has sex slavery, and honour killings.

Saudi Arabia is so brutal that last week they beheaded and crucified a man, putting his body on display for three days.

But wait, there's more! This just in: A Saudi court has ordered a man to be surgically paralyzed because of a stabbing he committed when he was 14! http://www.businessinsider.com/saudi-man-sentenced-to-be-paralyzed-2013-3

As Lego is banned in Europe for possibly looking similar to a distant mosque, 200 Christian homes have been burned down in Pakistan while, in India, a family was attacked by a mob for celebrating Easter. The mother's hands were cut into pieces.

As Canada is criticized for pulling out of a UN convention because it spent more money on bureaucracy than doing anything useful, Iran amalgamates its power there, heading the General Assembly's second-largest voting block. The same Iran that publicly hangs people and has thousands of Afghan refugees on death row.

But there is an intellectual community in Islam. For example, a Saudi cleric suggests that newborn baby girls should wear burkas to prevent being raped. This is not to be out done by a Tunisian cleric who, after seeing pics of a topless girl online, was so upset that he called for her to be stoned.

There's a fun side to Muslim countries, though. Infact, Iran has a TV show similar to, 'American Idol.' But there are laws against married women singing in public so there is quite some debate as to whether one of the contestants should receive 74 lashes.

And now for a video of a cleric describing what the virgins in heaven look like...

All of America is in fear right now, facing an invasion threat. There were massive rallies in North Korea today and they are threatening to attack. Their leader (Kim #3) has ordered strategic rocket and long-range artillery units into combat posture directed at the U.S. mainland, Hawaii and Guam.

On Thursday the U.S. announced that B-2 Stealth Bombers took off from Missouri and flew to South Korea to participate in military exercises as a warning to the North that America could strike at any time.

The United States defending itself from the DPRK is pointless. The communists have a well-disciplined army angered by the injustices that their country constantly faces. America should stand down and do nothing. When North Korean soldiers arrive they will arrive in force! And then lay down their weapons when they realize that in California they can get a Big Mac and watch a nudey film while listening to disco hits from the 1970s on what's known in the U.S. as an iPod.

Burger King will be America's first line of defense.

Not one. To create one that is can't be done. The very nature of being a State is filled with illegitimacy from the very foundation and throughout its entire structure.

But, I get really tired of those who mistake "The United States of America" for "America".

They are two entirely different things.

Back in the beginning of America, when those states that made it up were written about collectively, it was always called "the united States of America". No capitalized "u". America was what mattered. The states taken together made up America. One

American state would have been "a state of America"; two would have been "two states of America", and if two governors declared war on each other, their states could have been referred to as "warring states of America". There were states, they joined together in America, but their union was not the primary focus.

Suppose, using a personal example, I referred to my family as the "the joined individuals of the McManigal family". It would be ridiculous for anyone to primarily think of us as "The Joined Individuals", rather than "McManigals. It would be substituting the description for the actual thing.

To think of America as "The United States", or even "The United States of America", is just as ridiculous.

The United States is just the group of evil individuals, the government or "The State", who happen to currently prevent America from experiencing the full flower of liberty that was all that America was supposed to be about.

The United States is the worst enemy America has ever faced. America is only America as long as it protects the individual from the tyranny of The United States. Apparently that's a battle America lost and The United States of "America" won.

Time to reboot. Let's dispense with The State next time, and instead just stay out of the way as people freely associate in a truly voluntary manner.

.
