The blogosphere is already filled with cries of "special treatment". I don't think so -- it's fairly common for weak impaired cases to be pleaded down to careless. Usually the Crown sees a decent chance of losing flat out and then agrees to a plea to careless. The drug charges may well have been tainted by an improper search. Overall a good result for Jaffer but not one reflecting special treatment.http://tiny.cc/pandabear119Former Conservative MP Rahim Jaffer pleaded guilty Tuesday in an Ontario courtroom to careless driving and must pay a $500 fine.Jaffer had been charged with impaired driving and possession of cocaine but those charges were dropped. Jaffer will also donate $500 to charity.Outside the Orangeville courthouse, Jaffer apologized for his actions and acknowledged the seriousness of the charges. But he said he was pleased the ordeal was over."I'm relieved. Yet even he condemns Liz Cheney's tactics to smear the lawyers of the US Justice Department. What is with the Cheneys?Liz Cheney's father Dick Cheney started this one-trillion dollar war with Iraq which has resulted in murder and mayhem, and jeopardized World peace (after all, it was Cheney who was REALLY in charge in the Whitehouse). Now his daughter wants to bring back the McCarthyism of the 1950s. It is good that even staunch conservatives and Republicans are calling her out on this. NaylorAs originally posted: Second Vermont RepublicDecember 15, 2009Radical nonviolence can undermine power and authority by withdrawing the approval, moral support, and cooperation of those who have been dealt an injustice. It derives its strength from the energy buildup and very real power of powerlessness. Not unlike virtually every other political leader throughout history who has ever led his nation into war, President Barack Obama frames the war on terrorism as one in which we have only two choices. Either take the war to the enemy in Afghanistan and Iraq, killing the terrorists in their own backyard, or risk being killed by them here at home.Kill or be killed. Those are our only options. We are the children of light, the source of all that is good. They are the children of darkness, the source of all evil. Since only we deserve to live, they are obliged to die. It is one of the worst hoaxes in human history including war crimes and crimes against humanity. Bush and Cheney carried out a blood bath and genocide in Iraq in the name of democracy. Is it a democracy?-Ask the relatives of the millions who were killed during Bush, Cheney and Rumsfeld's blood bath in Iraq for oil - oil which is now being shared by the US and its European partners. Ask the millions who are refugees in neighbouring countries to escape the blood bath. Ask those millions who are living in squalor with no running water, proper food or shelter, struggling to survive in Iraq. A country was destroyed and its infrastructure was destroyed with the pretence of "democracy". Many were killed during the so-called recent elections because perpetual animosities have been created through this war of atrocity. In order to properly understand these issues, we must therefore consider the concepts of what is "voluntary" and what is "consent."It is often believed by the proponents of this or that hierarchy that they are based on consent, they are voluntary, and that this assumed fact wipes out any further objections. This, in their opinion, is the ultimate freedom, and therefore it does not matter what the results are; as long as we all consent to being exploited physically,

2 Vote(s)

What Is the Economy?by Francois TremblayAs originally posted on: Check Your PremisesFebruary 28, 2010We routinely talk about "the economy" as if it were a self-evident concept. We say "the economy is growing" and "the economy is in bad shape," without really discussing what it is exactly that we're referring to. There are three measures we use more or less interchangeably when we discuss "the economy": GDP, retail sales and employment. The GDP includes, to generalize, everything produced and consumed within a country or exported to other countries. In this "everything in one pot" view, everything counts, regardless of its causes or its effects on society. You contract an illness and buy medical care, you're in a wreck and pay for car repairs, you buy cigarettes or alcohol based on an addiction, factories are rebuilt after a war, shells and fighter planes are built to destroy those factories, a lumber company cuts down a forest down to the last tree, the government spends billions on a

2 Vote(s)
